Personal Cash Flow Statement
Excel template.

List the money you receive and the money you pay out each month. Inflows minus outflows equal net cash flow. This free Excel worksheet tracks 12 months so you can see which months add cash and which require a cushion.

How do I build a personal cash flow statement?

  1. Choose the accounts and cash movements you want to track. Transfers between two included accounts do not create income.
  2. Replace the sample inflows and outflows with your monthly amounts. Use a consistent treatment for savings transfers and credit-card payments.
  3. Review each month’s net cash flow and the cumulative total. Look ahead to large bills or months with lower income.
  4. Add the cumulative net flow to your opening cash balance separately if you want to estimate cash on hand.

Worked example

Positive cash flow is a change, not a balance

Monthly inflows
$5,000
Monthly outflows
−$4,500
Net cash flow
+$500

With $2,000 of opening cash and no other movements, a $500 net inflow leaves $2,500. The worksheet’s cumulative net-flow figure alone is not your bank balance.

Know what the model leaves out

This is a personal cash worksheet, not a business cash-flow statement under accounting standards. It records cash movements, not changes in the value of investments or property. Its cumulative total does not include an opening cash balance.

Common questions

What is the difference between a budget and a cash flow statement?

A budget sets a spending plan. A cash flow statement shows money moving in and out over time. Use planned cash flows to forecast a shortfall and actual cash flows to check what happened.

Does positive cash flow mean my net worth increased?

Not necessarily. Borrowing can increase cash while creating an equal liability. Net worth measures assets minus liabilities; cash flow measures cash movements during a period.
