Net Worth Tracker
Excel template.

Net worth is the value of what you own minus what you owe on the same date. This free Excel net worth tracker separates assets and liabilities and provides a 12-quarter history for tracking changes over time.

How do I calculate and track my net worth?

  1. Pick a valuation date. Enter cash, investments, property, and other assets using current values rather than original purchase prices.
  2. Enter outstanding loan and credit balances as liabilities. Use the balance owed, not the monthly payment.
  3. Check that every asset and debt appears once. List a home’s value and its mortgage separately.
  4. Save a quarterly snapshot using a consistent valuation method. Investigate changes rather than treating every increase as spendable cash.

Worked example

A simple $40,000 net worth

Cash
$10,000
Investments
$40,000
Vehicle value
$15,000
Student and auto debt
−$25,000

$65,000 of assets − $25,000 of liabilities = $40,000 net worth.

Know what the model leaves out

An estimated asset value is not guaranteed sale proceeds. Taxes, selling costs, liquidity, and access restrictions matter. Retirement savings and home equity contribute to net worth but are not interchangeable with an emergency cash reserve.

Common questions

Do retirement accounts count toward net worth?

Yes. Include their current balances as assets, but recognize that taxes and withdrawal restrictions may reduce what is available to spend. Use a consistent basis when comparing snapshots.

Do I count my whole home value or just the equity?

In this worksheet, enter the full estimated home value as an asset and the mortgage balance as a liability. Entering only equity and also subtracting the mortgage would count the debt twice.
