How an Immigrant's "Chip on His Shoulder" Fueled a Career—And Why He Had to Let It Go to Build a Life.
Before I share the details of my conversation with my friend, Jotham Ty, I want to state something upfront. I have the utmost respect for his journey and for his courage in publicly acknowledging a struggle that most of us face in private: the habit of tying our identities so tightly to our work.
So many of us spend our lives climbing mountains, driven by ambition, without having the courage to ask if we’re climbing the right ones in the first place. Jotham’s story is about what happens when you find that courage, to stop, look at the map, and choose a different path.
It’s a story that needed to be told. Thank you Jotham Ty for sharing it.
The Start of the Climb
There’s a scene from our conversation that I can’t shake.
Jotham is 19 years old. He’s the son of immigrants from the Philippines, growing up in a working-class neighborhood where a corporate career felt like a world away. He’s raw, unpolished, and fueled by a quiet, burning defiance. He walks up to a random CPA’s office, knocks on the door, and asks the person who answers if he can have 20 minutes of their time, just to understand what their life is like.
That single moment was an act of rebellion, a physical manifestation of what Jotham calls a "chip on his shoulder." As he told me, the surest way to get him to do something was simple: “Just tell me I can’t do it.”
That chip became his superpower. It propelled him to earn his CPA and land a coveted job in Big Four accounting. But even there, the feeling lingered. Accountants are often treated like underdogs. So, the chip found a new mission. Jotham took the ultimate leap, leaving the security of his career to found his own tech company.
And he succeeded. He became the CEO he once thought was an impossible dream. He had proven everyone wrong. But what happens when the engine that powers your ascent runs so hot, for so long, that it threatens to shake your entire life apart?
The Reckoning
For years, Jotham’s ambition was a straight line pointing up. But behind the scenes, the cost was accumulating. “I've disregarded and neglected my health for so many years,” he admitted, his voice heavy with the clarity of hindsight. “I'm surprised that my body held up as long as it did.”
Eventually, something had to give. A health crisis. what his doctor bluntly called “bad genes, bad luck”, brought his world to a screeching halt. The very identity he had forged, the relentless fighter who outworks everyone, was now the primary threat to his well-being.
This is a moment many high-achievers face. The tools that got you here are no longer the tools that can get you there. To understand what happened next, we need a different kind of map. This is where the RISE Again Framework from my upcoming book becomes essential.
From Breaking Point to Breakthrough: The Framework in Action
Jotham’s story is a perfect, real-world case study of this framework. He used this challenge to rebuild his entire operating system, recognizing his old engine was faulty and redesigning it based on his core values.
1. Realigning Ambition with a New Calling
The framework shows that our highest purpose, our Calling, must be built on a foundation of Character, Connection, and Capacity. Jotham’s initial calling, to prove them wrong, was powerful. It built his Character (grit), forced him to make Connections (knocking on doors), and developed his Capacity (CPA to CEO).
But his health crisis served as a powerful reckoning, revealing a deep misalignment. The pursuit of his calling was actively draining the very foundations it stood upon. Health is a fundamental driver of our Capacity, and his was compromised. The tunnel vision required to win left little room for the Connections that truly sustain us.
His ambition had created a house divided against itself; the calling could not stand. It had to evolve. His new, higher calling became clear: to trade relentless achievement for presence and meaning. As he told me, “I may be entering this phase in my life where being present might be more critical for me... than achieving the next big thing.”
2. Living Authentically by Rewriting Your Story
At the center of the framework is Authenticity. For years, Jotham’s authentic story was the underdog. It was a powerful narrative, but it was also a trap. It required him to constantly be fighting.
The health crisis forced him to write and live a new, more difficult truth. His story changed from "the man who proves everyone wrong" to "the man who is brave enough to choose himself." He had to let go of the identity that made him successful to save the person he was.
3. Building True Resilience Through the RISE Cycle
The world mistakenly defines resilience as toughness. Jotham’s story proves that his toughness is what led him to his breaking point. True resilience is a dynamic process of Reflection, Intention, Strategic Action, and Evaluation, all rooted in your authenticity - what I call the "RISE Again" framework.
Reflection: Jotham took a deep, honest look at his life. He even used AI as a tool for clarity, feeding it his values and goals to help him see the path forward.
Intention: He set a new, clear intention, to prioritize his health and well-being above all else.
Strategic Action: This was the hardest part. The action was to let go. He strategically surrendered the CEO title, an act not of weakness, but of profound strength and self-awareness. The fact that he set up a company to last beyond himself is a testament to his leadership that any aspiring leader should emulate.
Evaluation: He is now in the ongoing process of evaluating this new chapter, discovering a new definition of a successful day, week, and life.
Final Thoughts: Your Breaking Point is an Invitation
Jotham’s story is about courageous realignment. He leveraged a profound challenge to build a life where his ambition is finally in service of his well-being, not at war with it. He's moving forward, stronger and more whole than before.
His journey is a powerful mirror for all of us who tie our worth to our work. It asks us to consider the stories we tell ourselves about success and to have the courage to rewrite them when they no longer serve us.
I’ll leave you with this question: What part of your life needs a courageous realignment?
